On May 14, 2025, the ozone plant was officially commissioned to perform an advanced chemical oxidation process on the effluent from the sedimentation stage of the first biological treatment stage. The commissioning involved the restoration of the existing on-site plant, which had previously been used for sludge treatment via ozonolysis.
The introduction of ozone into the wastewater leads to the formation of hydroxyl radicals, highly reactive species that interact with dissolved pollutants, triggering a sequence of rapid and effective oxidative reactions. This process allows for increased COD removal, with partial degradation of recalcitrant COD compounds, as well as increased biodegradability of the wastewater, a reduction in the load on the tertiary treatment system downstream of the plant, and an improvement in the final color of the treated wastewater.
