Chromium Recovery

The Chromium Recovery Consortium (CRC) has been part of Aquarno Spa since 2016. It operates under an authorisation issued by the Tuscany Region (D.D. 7913) pursuant to Article 208 of Legislative Decree 152/2006. This is a strategic facility that represents a real strength for Tuscany’s leather tanning district, as it makes it possible to transform waste into a resource, closing its cycle in the most virtuous way possible (End of Waste). More than 250 companies from the leather district deliver their waste to the facility. The facility’s activity consists of receiving and treating spent baths from the chrome tanning phase in order to extract the chromium and make it available again for tanning processes. This has a twofold value: economic, through the recovery of an important and strategic product; and environmental, by preventing large quantities of this metal from ending up in the sludge resulting from wastewater treatment.

THE PROCESS

How recovery takes place

Tanneries deliver spent baths to the consortium facility by road transport, both in liquid form, either as is or flocculated, and in the form of pressed panels. Each year, the Consortium receives approximately 90,000 tonnes of spent solution with an average chromium content of 0.4%, and is able to recover more than 85% of the chromium delivered, producing a product with an average CrSO4 content exceeding 9–10%.

Acceptance and pre-treatment:
Deliveries are accepted following a specific approval procedure. Each incoming load is weighed and analysed by the Aquarno laboratory to determine the exact quantity of chromium delivered. Once at the facility, the waste is sampled and checked before being sent for treatment. The initial operations include fine screening followed by homogenisation.
Chromium precipitation:

Once homogenised, the waste is fed into a reactor where the chemical precipitation of chromium takes place (insoluble at alkaline pH), using 50% caustic soda. The precipitated chromium is then concentrated, through two filter-press lines, into solid and dewatered panels.

Product refining:

Once the chromium has been almost completely separated, the refining phase begins. The panel is dissolved again in dedicated reactors with the addition of 97–98% sulphuric acid, producing a chromium sulphate solution. The solution is then mixed with diatomaceous earth, which absorbs any impurities still present. The earth is subsequently separated through a second filter press (polishing stage).

Final checks and return:

The pressing process produces a stream of liquid basic chromium sulphate, which is stored in tanks (batches) and analysed. Only after a positive result from the laboratory, which certifies its quality according to a specific technical data sheet, can the product be returned to production sites for reuse within the tanning cycle.
