On 17 July 2026, the facility at Ponte a Cappiano – one of the key hubs of the ‘Tubone’ project – was officially opened in the presence of the mayors of the Cuoio District, senior officials from the Wastewater Treatment Consortium, Aquarno and the Tanners’ Association, and the President of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani.
This project represents a strategic initiative for the improvement and reorganisation of the wastewater treatment system in the Val di Nievole area.
Specifically, three tanks for the reception and discharge of wastewater have been refurbished, and two pumping stations and a mechanical pre-treatment plant – comprising screening and grit removal stages – have been constructed. These works are specifically designed for the preliminary treatment of urban wastewater from the Val di Nievole, prior to the subsequent purification process, which will take place at the Santa Croce sull’Arno treatment plant.
The completion of these works will also enable the sewerage infrastructure built by Acque S.p.A. – which hydraulically connects the inhabited areas of the Val di Nievole as far as Montecatini to the District’s treatment system – to become operational. Initially, the plant will be capable of receiving and conveying a volume of 10,000 cubic metres of urban wastewater per day to the Santa Croce treatment plant, thereby significantly improving treatment efficiency and effluent quality.
